Community Involvement

American Electric Power, our employees and retirees are proud to support and play an active, positive role in communities where we live and work. That's more than simply a corporate goal -- that's a way of working and living that employees embrace time and again.

Corporate Giving

AEP is a financial supporter of non-profit organizations whose focus is improving the quality of life. Whether targeting improvements in education or tackling the issues of hunger and homelessness, AEP's giving is meant to help non-profit organizations address and positively impact community life.

View our corporate giving guidelines , including AEP's focus on the areas of education, environment and human services such as hunger, housing, health and safety.

AEP Connects recognizes efforts of AEP employees and retirees who roll up their sleeves and spend time volunteering with eligible schools and non-profit organizations by providing $150 grants to the organizations they support.

Education

Louie the lightning bug Perhaps no other facet of community life presents both the challenges and the limitless possibilities found in the education of young people. AEP is proud to be a partner in education, particularly in grades pre-K to 12. Through AEP's workshops, initiatives and educational resources, we strive to make a difference in the lives and the learning of teachers, students and customers within our service territory.

The Electric Universe is a Web-based galaxy of information on electricity for both teachers and students. Explore the science and history of electricity, try experiments and learn how to "play it safe around electricity," as Louie the Lightning Bug reminds.

Sometimes all that stands between a teacher and an innovative educational experience is a few dollars to make it happen. That's why AEP's Teacher Vision Grant program offers grants of $100 to $500 to educators who have a creative idea for an academic project to improve academic achievement. Educators of grades pre-K through 12 who live or teach in AEP's service area or in communities with major AEP facilities may apply.

The AEP Workshops for Educators provide professional development opportunities for teachers of grades pre-K through 12 in the areas of energy, economics and the environment to help students meet higher state education standards.

Electrical safety is a core component of AEP's education mission, including live theater presentations and safety resources featuring safety spokesbug Louie the Lightning Bug.

Energy education efforts, including the National Energy Education Development Project and other programs, aim to inspire life-long learners capable of making wise energy choices.

AEP's education initiatives focus on collaborative efforts to bring about meaningful change in teaching and learning especially in areas of science and technology.

Important notice for students and teachers within AEP's service area: Learn about electrical safety by ordering a free copy of Louie the Lightning Bug's safety booklet and/or teaching kit. See the order form.
