Energy, Economics and the Environment Workshop for Teachers
Dates June 9 - 13 and 16 - 19, 2008. Final project due June 20.

Course description The economics content will prepare participants: to understand the interaction between energy and economic growth; to identify tradeoffs that exist between energy and the environment; to recognize externalities that arise in the economy; and to appreciate the issues involved in deregulating the electricity generating industry. Various speakers from AEP and other agencies, along with teachers with recognized expertise in teaching units on energy and the environment, will provide guest lectures. A tour will visit nuclear, coal-fired and hydroelectric plants in Indiana, Michigan and/or Ohio.
Who Teachers grades K-12
Credits 3 hours graduate credit (BUFW F561, Energy, Economics and the Environment). Teachers may make special arrangements for undergraduate credit in economics, if that fits better within their education plans.
When Classroom sessions will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, except for a field trip 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. one day during the first week.

Workshop projects Participants will prepare and submit a copy of a curriculum unit (at least five lessons) that will be used in teaching a portion of the content of this workshop in the participant's classes during the 2008-2009 school year. Project due June 20.

Cost $100 -- see contact info below. Balance of tuition provided free to Indiana residents by sponsors Indiana Council for Economic Education, Indiana Michigan Power and IPFW Doermer School of Business and Management Sciences. Students should anticipate some cost for meals on day field trips.
