Energy, Economics and the Environment Workshop for Teachers
Dates June 14 - 18 and 21 - 24, 2010. Final project due June 25.

Course description The economics content will prepare participants: to understand the interaction between energy and economic growth; to identify trade-offs that exist between energy and the environment; to recognize externalities that arise in the economy; and to appreciate the issues involved in deregulating the electricity generating industry. Various speakers from AEP and other agencies, along with teachers with recognized expertise in teaching units on energy and the environment, will provide guest lectures. A tour will visit coal-fired and hydroelectric plants in Indiana.
Who Teachers grades K-12
Credits Three hours graduate credit (BUFW F561, Energy, Economics and the Environment). Teachers may make special arrangements for undergraduate credit in economics, if that fits better within their education plans.
When Classroom sessions will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, except for a field trip 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. one day during the first week.

Workshop projects Participants will prepare and submit a copy of a curriculum unit (at least five lessons) that will be used in teaching a portion of the content of this workshop in the participant's classes during the 2010-2011 school year. Project due June 25.

Cost Indiana residents will receive a $600 scholarship to be applied towards tuition expenses provided by sponsors Indiana Council for Economic Education and Indiana Michigan Power. Students should anticipate some cost for meals on day field trips.
