Professional development
workshops
American Electric
Power, partnering with local
universities and educational
organizations, sponsors professional
development workshops on topics
such as energy, electricity,
environment, economics and
scientific inquiry for Pre-K
through grade 12 educators
each summer. These transdisciplinary
courses are designed to provide:
hands-on learning; real-world
perspectives; and materials,
technologies and strategies
to strengthen classroom teaching
and learning.
Tours may include a mine reclamation
area, international wildlife
preserve, coal-fired, hydro
or nuclear power plants, wind
or solar generation facilities,
constructed wetlands, surface
or underground coal mines,
or other facilities in AEP's
11-state service territory.
Workshops range from one to
10 days. Most offer graduate
credit, ranging from one to
three hours. Course fees vary
by workshop -- most are free,
but some require graduate tuition
for optional credit and/or
a nominal, nonrefundable registration
fee.
Class sizes range from 12
to 30 participants, with priority
given to educators from AEP's
service territory in Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky,
Louisiana, Michigan, Ohio,
Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas,
Virginia and West Virginia.
