During Calendar year 2006, American Electric Power conducted the following recycling
activities: (This information was gathered from multiple sources
using various tracking methods and may not be 100% accurate to the number, gallon
or pound)
- 1,687,486 pounds of paper and cardboard. An initiative is currently underway
to continue to increase this activity across the system.
- 19,113 pieces (326,993 pounds) of used electronic equipment.
- 525,439 pounds of lead cable and lead acid batteries.
- 153,161 spent light bulbs of various sizes and shapes.
- 889,876 gallons of used oil.
- 2,090 gallons of used antifreeze.
- 8,040 pounds of used oil filters.
- 5,414 gallons of oily water.
- 10,742 gallons of used parts washer solvent.
- 14,564 pounds of used lubricating grease.
- 4,254,000 pounds of spent blasting material.
- 5,600 pounds of kitchen oil.
- 1032 pounds of mercury.
- 5,677,307 pounds of boiler chemical metal cleaning waste
Significant Pollution Prevention Programs by Plant
- Glen Lyn: Incinerated 100,000 gallons of chemical metal cleaning
wastes (CMCW)
- Amos: Recycled 5600 pounds of kitchen oil
- Fort Phantom: Recycled 27 pounds of mercury
- Wilkes: Used a wet / process water filtration method to clean and
prepare oil storage tank (740,000 gal. capacity) surface for painting.

- Installation of interceptor tank to catch potential oil spills from vents from Units
1-4 fuel oil system
- Dredged the Units 1-4 boiler slag pond to reduce risk of TSS exceedances
- Wilkes: Incinerated 183,923 gallons of used mineral oil for
energy recovery
- Conesville: Incinerated 5,577,307 pounds of boiler chemical
metal cleaning waste
- Elmwood Marine: Recycled 4,254,000 pounds of spent blasting
material
- Muskingum River: Installation of permanent skimmer on the
Unit 5 Waste Water Pond
- Mountaineer: Incinerated 7,903 pounds of their hazardous
waste for energy recovery (solvents from the stack liner project)
- Cook Plant: Recycled 2135 Gallons of electrohydraulic control
(EHC) fluid
- Dolet Hills: Recycled 14,654 pounds of lubricating grease
- Kammer / Mitchell: Recycled 629,240 pounds of spent blasting
materials
- Kammer: Incinerated 300,000 gallons of boiler chemical metal
cleaning waste
- Sweeny Plant: Switched to an oil filter disposal firm that
recycles all filters and they are removing all mercury thermostats from the plant
- Breed Plant: Demolition produced 1,005 pounds of mercury
that was recycled
