AEP-SWEPCO, in partnership
with the Louisiana Department
of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF)
and the Caddo Career and Technology
Center (CCTC), recently installed
two nesting houses for barn
owls at the Bayou Pierre Wildlife
Management Area south of Shreveport.
High school students at the
CCTC in Shreveport constructed
the two nesting houses and
were on hand when AEP-SWEPCO
crews installed the structures. "We
believe the three resident
barn owls that are now nesting
in an adjacent grain silo will
move to the newly erected houses
in the very near future," said
Brian Bond, AEP's environmental
manager for waste/T&D compliance. "The
barn owl project has provided
an excellent opportunity for
us to build working relationships
with local wildlife staff and
high school students, as well
as providing a benefit to the
environment."
Representatives from the
local news media and the Shreveport
Society for Nature Study, Inc.
also attended the event.
