AEP leadership in e8 San Cristobal Wind Project
AEP dedicated the San Cristobal Wind Project in March 2008 at San Cristobal Island, Galapagos, marking an historic milestone with global significance. The 2.4 MW project, completed in collaboration with e8, the United Nations and Ecuador, is the first large-scale wind project in Ecuador and is one of the largest wind-diesel hybrid systems in the world.

With major AEP funding and project leadership, this project underscores AEP’s vision to lead in technical innovation of power systems and environmental technology, and in building strong communities. By partnering with e8 and other organizations, AEP shares knowledge and technology that results in positive benefits for the environment and for society.

The project reduces carbon dioxide emissions, decreases diesel fuel spill risks, and provides protection for the endangered Galapagos petrel.

San Cristobal Wind Project is a global model for what can be achieved by public-private partnerships to meet basic energy needs while protecting the environment. The project is based on a sustainable business model and has potential for wider application, especially in remote and small island settings.
