American Electric Power (NYSE: AEP) and Buckeye Power are investing in new environmental controls at the jointly owned Cardinal Power Plant in Brilliant, Ohio, a project that not only will reduce emissions but also will provide a boost to the area´s economy. The firms are conducting preliminary studies and engineering for the installation of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems on units 1 and 2 of the Cardinal Plant. FGD systems, commonly called scrubbers, reduce sulfur dioxide emissions, a contributor to acid rain, by up to 98 percent.

Proceeds from the sale, part of AEP´s plan to divest non-core assets and focus on core utility operations, will be used to reduce debt and strengthen the balance sheet. The sale includes LIG´s approximately 2,000 miles of natural gas gathering and transmission pipelines and five gas processing facilities that straddle the system. Not included in the transaction is Jefferson Island Storage and Hub L.L.C., which was acquired with the LIG assets by AEP but will be sold separately.

American Electric Power (NYSE: AEP) subsidiary Texas Central Co. (formerly known as Central Power and Light) has signed an agreement to sell its 7.8 percent share of Oklaunion Power Station to Golden Spread Electric Cooperative for $42.75 million. Proceeds from the sale will be used to reduce debt.
