Indiana Michigan Power

Dear Friends,

Indiana Michigan Power’s commitment to the communities we serve was even more critical in 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the lives and livelihoods of our customers.

I&M recognized that our communities’ needs were greater and stepped up immediately. The AEP Foundation, on behalf of I&M, provided $700,000 to social service agencies that are deeply aware of local residents’ needs. Grants were awarded across I&M’s service territory to food banks, local United Way agencies, community centers and more.

Later in the year, AEP Foundation and I&M stood up again, as I&M employees volunteered with food distribution while the AEP Foundation provided additional donations of more than $70,000. These contributions again helped meet food and housing needs of the citizens in our service area as well as providing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for healthcare workers, first responders and staff from social service agencies.

In addition to providing assistance to multiple cities across its service territory in Indiana and Michigan, including Benton Harbor, South Bend, Elkhart, Fort Wayne, Muncie, Marion and other cities, the AEP Foundation provided assistance in Rockport, where I&M has a generation plant.

Despite the pandemic, I&M continued its long-tradition of helping different agencies in other ways, in some cases adapting to achieve to serve the citizens of our communities while safely maintaining physical distancing and communicating virtually. For example, we adapted some of I&M’s Energy Efficiency programs to provide more than 8,000 energy-saving LED bulbs to social service agencies in the two states and added reusable face coverings and hand sanitizer to 750 home energy kits sent to Michigan customers.

In all, I&M provided over $1.4 million in support of charitable nonprofits and economic development initiatives in 2020. In addition, the AEP Foundation awarded over $2.7 million in grants to support multiple non-profit agencies in our communities.

Among the many ways I&M contributed to our communities in 2020:

  • In East Central Indiana, an AEP Foundation grant empowered the Muncie Mission to buy the first new box truck in its history in early 2020, just before the pandemic forced numerous closings. Throughout the year, the truck helped the mission feed 300-plus people per day.
  • In North Central Indiana, I&M partnered with ETHOS and the Elkhart Education Foundation to provide funds to offset the enrollment fees for EdCamp, which provides a safe, productive learning environment to support e-learning and enrichment classes in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM).
  • In Southwest Michigan, I&M sponsored the Boys & Girls Clubs of Benton Harbor’s annual fundraiser to help provide programs that improve educational readiness and achievement, mentoring programs, and help youth create great futures.
  • In northeast Indiana, I&M presented an AEP Foundation grant to the healthcare agency Visiting Nurse to expanding telehealth capabilities and communication tools to further reach patients served in 11 counties.

We look forward to a brighter 2021, with the hope that our employees will be able to safely resume their robust volunteer activities alongside our customers, helping make better communities brighter, while keeping the lights on, enhancing our infrastructure and providing new technology to empower our customers.

Sincerely,

Toby Thomas
President and Chief Operating Officer
