765 kV Transmission
For more than 60 years, American Electric Power has been the industry leader in 765 kV Extra High Voltage (EHV) transmission systems, the highest voltage level used in North America. From energizing the world’s first 765 kV line in 1969 to operating the largest network today, we continue to set the standard for transmission excellence.

Why 765 kV Transmission Matters
- More Power, Fewer Lines: A single 765 kV circuit carries up to six times the power of a 345 kV line, reducing the number of lines needed and minimizing environmental impact.
- Superior Efficiency: With half the transmission losses of lower voltage systems, 765 kV lines deliver electricity more efficiently over long distances.
- Smaller Overall Footprint: Requires less right-of-way than equivalent 345 kV systems, preserving landscapes and reducing construction costs of multiple 345 kV lines.
Engineering Excellence

Our commitment to innovation and reliability is reflected in our engineering standards, which ensure optimal, pre-tested designs for transmission lines and stations. Since 1987, the John E. Dolan Engineering Laboratory has supported continuous improvement through in-house testing and development. Our Transmission Line Standards team produces ready-to-deploy structure and insulator families, enabling efficient project execution.
Today, we operate more than 2,200 miles of 765 kV transmission lines across six states, supported by over 8,000 structures that span diverse terrain.
