Job Summary

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Transmission Planning Engineer to join our Regional Planning / Competitive Planning group. This role supports long-term transmission system planning, competitive project development, and regulatory compliance in coordination with Regional Transmission Organizations (RTOs) such as PJM, MISO, SPP, and ERCOT.

The successful candidate will apply technical modeling, regulatory knowledge, and strategic thinking to develop cost-effective, reliable, and policy-compliant transmission solutions.

**Position will in-office 5 days a week (Columbus, OH OR Tulsa, OK)**

Job Description

What You'll Do:

  • Conduct transmission planning studies, including steady-state, short circuit, and contingency analyses (e.g., N-1, N-1-1).

  • Perform generator deliverability, transfer capability, and economic planning assessments.

  • Support the development of transmission projects through competitive planning processes under FERC Order 1000.

  • Ensure compliance with NERC TPL standards through rigorous study and documentation.

  • Participate in regional transmission planning efforts with PJM, MISO, SPP, and ERCOT.

  • Utilize power system modeling tools such as PSS/E, TARA, PROMOD, UPLAN, ASPEN, CAPE.

  • Monitor and apply evolving policy frameworks, including FERC Order 1920 related to long-term regional transmission planning.

  • Prepare technical documentation and support internal and external stakeholder engagement.

  • Apply a foundational understanding of dynamic stability principles to planning activities.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (required); advanced degree a plus.

  • Understanding of NERC TPL reliability standards and compliance processes.

  • Familiarity with RTO/ISO transmission planning processes, especially PJM, MISO, SPP, ERCOT.

  • Knowledge of FERC Orders 1000 and 1920 and their implications for planning and cost allocation.

  • Proficiency with system analysis tools: PSS/E, TARA, PROMOD, UPLAN, ASPEN, CAPE.

  • Exposure to economic planning and production cost modeling concepts.

  • Familiarity with generator interconnection, transfer studies, and competitive project development.

  • Basic understanding of dynamic stability studies and related system performance criteria.

  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.

  • Collaborative approach with the ability to coordinate across internal and external stakeholders.

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or willingness to pursue one is a plus.

What We're Looking For:

Please note: We're considering 2 senior Engineering levels for this one opening. Below you can see the minimum qualifications for both:

Engineer Staff - Grade 10:

Range = $132,562.00 - $172,331.00 USD

  • Has typically acquired 10 or more years of related engineering experience along with a Bachelor's degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET; OR 8 years of related engineering experience along with a Master's degree or PhD in engineering from a program accredited by ABET.

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in any U.S. state or Puerto Rico is preferred for this position unless approval to waive this requirement is given by the organization's EVP.


Consulting Engineer - Grade 11:

Range = $155,761.00 - $202,491.00

  • Has typically acquired 16 or more years of related engineering experience along with a Bachelor's degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET*; or 14 years of related engineering experience along with a Master's or PhD in engineering from a program accredited by ABET*.  

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in any U.S. state or Puerto Rico** is required for this position unless approval to waive this requirement is given by the organization's EVP.

Acceptable alternative to ABET is:

  • A Bachelor's degree in engineering (non-ABET) plus a Master's degree or PhD in engineering from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor's program.

  • Confirmation is preferred to ensure the PE obtained in Puerto Rico aligns with NCEES standards.

**VP or above may waive the requirement for a degree from a university with an Non ABET accredited program**

Compensation Range:

$132,562.00-172,331.00 USD
