Job Summary
The Director, FERC Policy is responsible for developing strategic plans and positions to address key FERC policy issues impacting American Electric Power’s (AEP) businesses. This position requires direct engagement in a variety of matters before FERC, as well as collaboration with AEP’s Federal Affairs team to assess and influence federal legislation and activities from agencies such as the DOE and EPA related to FERC. The Director will need to understand and communicate the implications of FERC policy issues and actions on AEP’s initiatives at the RTO and state levels. This involves close collaboration with colleagues across AEP’s departments, operating companies, and regulatory leadership to develop strategic plans and policy positions. The role also includes participation in industry advocacy groups, such as the Edison Electric Institute (EEI), WIRES, and American Clean Power Association (ACP), to align AEP’s positions with advocacy activities. Additionally, the Director will represent AEP in joint advocacy initiatives with other utilities and stakeholders on key issues.At the direction of the Senior Vice President of Federal Affairs the Director will work with the internal FERC and legal teams as well as the AEP Transmission organization to represent AEP and its operating companies both internally and externally. This includes coordinating with internal subject matter experts and proactively developing policies and strategies beneficial to the company concerning FERC matters. The Director will also work with the Federal Affairs team to ensure consistent messaging to FERC staff and commissioners and contribute to stakeholder engagement efforts, including providing policy briefs to members of Congress and federal officials.
Job Description
What You'll Do:
- Stay informed about emerging regulations and policies affecting the company and update AEP business unit executives on relevant FERC orders, opinions, policies, and rulemakings. Anticipate and research unique legal issues that may introduce risk or impact AEP.
- Respond to requests from FERC and other federal officials by developing, organizing, and implementing corporate policy and strategy for effective federal representation on priority issues.
- Maintain strong working relationships with internal colleagues and be responsive to internal AEP requests.
- Ensure all written documentation or verbal communications reflect AEP’s regulatory strategy, company position, and shareholder interests.
- Uphold the highest ethical standards and support the company's Corporate Compliance Policy.
- Represent the company professionally before Congress, regulatory agencies, trade associations (e.g., EEI, WIRES, Business Roundtable, ACP), and public policy organizations.
- Assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
What We're Looking For:
Education:
- Bachelor's degree required.
- Master's degree or JD highly preferred.
Work Experience:
- Strong preference for candidates with experience at FERC.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in the energy industry.
- Detailed knowledge of FERC and established relationships are highly desired.
Other Must Haves:
- Ability to effectively interface with senior and executive-level stakeholders is required.
- Strong analytical, oral, and written communication, and presentation skills are required.
- A self-starter with a strong sense of urgency is essential. The candidate should demonstrate a proactive mindset and maintain a positive attitude.
- Position requires in-office attendance five days a week.
