Job Summary

The "D" Mechanic spends much of the grade becoming oriented to a Hydro plant. It is a learning stage where often the equipment and tools are new to the individual. They must perform duties as a helper to "C", "B", and "A" mechanics, as well as learn Company rules and procedures related to Job Safety, Environmental Protection, Operations, Basic Skills and Maintenance of hydro power plant structures and equipment. Skills and job knowledge will be developed through training resources such as classrooms, videos, computers, and on the job demonstrations.

Job Description

What You'll Do:

  • Utilize a working knowledge of hand tools and portable power tools and their correct usage in order to maintain plant equipment.
  • Utilize a working knowledge of basic measuring tools such as rules, scales, straight edges, dividers, squares and protractors, layout simple figures on flat surfaces.
  • Calculate areas, volumes, weights, etc. utilizing basic mathematical concepts.
  • Comprehend moderately complex written material such as procedures, instructions, technical manuals, etc.
  • Assist employees of a higher classification.
  • Prepare and maintain records as required. This will include the accurate completion of job orders and writing new ones.
  • Assist in obtaining clearance permits and ensure that the equipment to be worked on has been properly cleared and tagged before work begins.
  • Learn and comply with AEP safety/environmental/health policies as well as regulatory policies.
  • Assist engineers and others with root cause determination of equipment/component failures.
  • Assist employees and perform similar or less skilled duties as assigned.

What We're Looking For:

Education requirements are listed below:

  • Associate degree in engineering, industrial or energy technology; OR Associate degree in another discipline and two (2) years of related work experience OR high school diploma with four (4) years of related work experience; OR high school diploma with two (2) years of related military experience. Related experience is listed under Principal Accountabilities.

Work Experience requirement listed below:

  • Must satisfactorily complete, in such time frames as may be established by the company, all required training, testing, and job demonstrations to advance to the Hydro Mechanic "C" classification or vacate the Hydro Mechanic "D" classification.

Required License(s)/Certification(s) are listed below:

  • Must possess a valid State driver's license; may also be required to obtain other licenses required to operate applicable plant vehicles and equipment.

Other Must Haves:

  • Physical demand level is Medium
  • Advancement will be based on an individual’s demonstrated ability to meet the Qualifications requirements and perform the applicable “C” grade job duties as set forth in this Job Specification.
  • Work shift schedule as well as irregular hours, and respond to calls outside of scheduled hours as required by the job.
  • Ability and willingness to make independent decisions necessary for proper performance of job duties when the nature of the job requires working alone or working without supervision.
  • Willingness to assist with work, when the need arises, in any department or phase of the Company’s operations for which qualified.
  • 50%-75% of travel time associated with this position.
  • Must complete all required training and testing requirements as established by the company.
  • Must be able to learn the rules, safety practices and procedures applicable to the work. Must be able to learn the tools and equipment and their use as required in the work. Must be able to read, interpret and work from simple prints and specifications and have the ability to gain a working knowledge of OSHA and Environmental guidelines.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Perform work in confined spaces, at heights such as elevated walkways and platforms, and over grated openings.
  • Work outdoors during inclement weather.
  • Climb ladders & stairs a number of times each day.
  • Use fine dexterity to move switches & controls to precise location.
  • Detect color on alarms, equipment & other devices.
  • Hear announcements on the Plant PA system, and to hear abnormal sounds of plant equipment.
  • Communicate plant information by phone, in person or by radio.
  • Exert up to 50 lbs. of pressure to manually turn off valves.
  • Able to stand or walk continuously for up to 12 hours.

Compensation Grade:

Compensation Range:

$27.64-29.37 USD

The Physical Demand Level for this job is: M – Medium Work: Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.   Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
