The Pearl Street Generating Station, the first U.S. power plant, opened in Manhattan on Sept. 4, 1882. Its success paved the way for thousands of facilities that power the world today.

On Sept. 5, AEP celebrates Power Plant Employee Appreciation Day, recognizing our many power plant employees who work tirelessly, day in and day out, to support generating electricity. They are essential in ensuring our customers have safe, reliable and affordable power.

“I want to thank each power plant employee for their dedication to delivering a critical service to our customers,” said Bill Fehrman, chairman, president and CEO. “While working at a coal-fired power plant early in my career, I developed a deep appreciation for the immense effort and sacrifice it takes to keep the lights on. I am proud of the work you do every hour of every day for our customers. As we advance our small modular reactor plans, we will rely on Generation's skills and strong talent pipeline more than ever.”

As AEP advances new initiatives to meet rising demands, our thousands of plant employees will play a vital role in advancing our capabilities. From Amos in West Virginia to Riverside in Oklahoma, they work around the clock across over 50 generating sites.

Employees trade valuable time with their families and friends to ensure our customers receive uninterrupted, safe and reliable service. They make the 24-hour, 7-day-a-week plant operations that power our communities possible.
