Sept. 15, 1999News Release
COLUMBUS, Ohio, Sept. 15, 1999 – American Electric Power (NYSE: AEP) has dispatched crews to assist southern and possibly east coast utilities in efforts to restore power disrupted by Hurricane Floyd. "We received a request from Carolina Power & Light to have crews on standby in the event Hurricane Floyd does serious damage," said Peter Splawnyk, senior vice president - distribution for American Electric Power. "We have also received requests for crew support from other utilities in the south and along the east coast. "Utilities have always helped their neighbors during situations like this," Splawnyk said. "We will do everything we can to assist CP&L and others in their efforts to recover from damages caused by Hurricane Floyd." According to Splawnyk, 62 two-person crews with trucks and equipment left this morning for Asheville, N.C., where they will be available to respond to problems in other areas as needed. The AEP crews are based in Indiana, Ohio and northern West Virginia. By providing crews from the northern part of its seven-state service territory, AEP can keep sufficient personnel based in Kentucky, southern West Virginia, Virginia and Tennessee available to respond to hurricane-related problems that may be incurred in the company's southern region. AEP has also released line and right-of-way contractors so they can be available to help with storm damage elsewhere based on the contractors' commitments. "We will continue to monitor weather reports and will adjust our plans as necessary," Splawnyk said." AEP, a global energy company, is one of the United States' largest investor-owned utilities, providing energy to 3 million customers in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. AEP has holdings in the United States, the United Kingdom, China and Australia. Wholly owned subsidiaries provide power engineering, energy consulting and energy management services around the world. The company is based in Columbus, Ohio. On Dec. 22, 1997, AEP announced a definitive merger agreement for a tax-free, stock-for-stock transaction with Central and South West Corp., a public utility holding company based in Dallas.
