COLUMBUS, Ohio, May 13, 1998 -- American Electric Power (NYSE: AEP) joined with the Pew Center on Global Climate Change to ensure its voice in the high-stakes global warming debate is heard.

The Pew Center organization and its list of corporate backers, including AEP, was announced May 7. The Pew Center will undertake studies, conduct public education, promote climate change solutions globally and work with businesses to develop marketplace solutions to reduce greenhouse gasses.

"AEP´s decision to join the Pew Center on Global Climate Change Business Environmental Leadership Council represents an extension of our activities to address the concerns about global climate change on a voluntary, proactive and cost-effective basis," said Dale Heydlauff, vice president, environmental affairs for AEP. "Participation in the Council provides us an opportunity to illustrate the range of activities that can be undertaken to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. It also provides us an opportunity to promote the use of market-based policy instruments and inclusion of developing countries in a global response to this issue.

"Our ultimate aim through participation in the council and our other activities on this issue is to secure adoption of reasonable, achievable and effective actions to address the global climate change issue.

"AEP does not endorse or support the Kyoto Protocol and opposes ratification of the treaty in its current form," Heydlauff said.
