COLUMBUS, Ohio, Jan. 24, 2001 - American Electric Power (NYSE: AEP) has named Jeffrey D. Cross its general counsel. Cross has served as acting general counsel since an executive management realignment last September.

Cross has been senior vice president and deputy general counsel since June 2000. He was named acting general counsel reporting to Susan Tomasky Sept. 28 when Tomasky was named executive vice president - policy, finance and strategic planning and chief financial officer.

“Jeff is a capable and experienced lawyer who is highly qualified to oversee the legal affairs of this company. We expect him to make a great contribution to our legal department,” Tomasky said.

Cross joined AEP in 1984 as an attorney in the legal department. He was promoted to senior attorney and assistant secretary in 1987 and became assistant general counsel in 1994. He was appointed general counsel of AEP Resources Inc., an AEP subsidiary, the same year and named a vice president of AEP Resources in 1996.

Cross earned a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Cincinnati in 1978 and graduated from the University of Cincinnati Law School in 1982.
