BRIDGMAN, Mich., Feb. 5, 2003 - American Electric Power’s (NYSE: AEP) Cook Nuclear Plant Unit 1 returned to service today after a 21-day outage to replace the main transformer.

A fire, caused by an internal phase-to-phase electrical fault, damaged the transformer and resulted in the automatic shutdown of the reactor on Jan. 15.

A spare transformer was available on-site. Connections from the transformer to the adjacent transmission tower also had to be replaced. The old transformer will not be repaired, and a new spare will be purchased.

American Electric Power owns and operates more than 42,000 megawatts of generating capacity in the United States and select international markets and is the largest electricity generator in the U.S. AEP is also one of the largest electric utilities in the United States, with almost 5 million customers linked to AEP’s 11-state electricity transmission and distribution grid. The company is based in Columbus, Ohio.
