COLUMBUS, Ohio, May 7, 2004 - Two executives of American Electric Power (NYSE: AEP) have been recognized as “key women in energy in the Americas.”

Holly Koeppel, executive vice president - commercial operations, and Melinda Ackerman, senior vice president - human resources, received Key Women in Energy awards this week. The program, sponsored by Houston-based energy consultancy RaderEnergy, recognizes women who have made significant contributions to the energy sector or related businesses.

Koeppel placed first in the “leadership” award category and Ackerman was honored in the “wisdom” category. Both were recognized in the same program last year as well.

One hundred women representing 19 countries or nationalities were selected for recognition from among approximately 400 nominated this year.

Other past AEP honorees are Michelle Kalnas, senior vice president - supply chain, and Susan Tomasky, executive vice president - policy, finance and strategic planning and chief financial officer. Koeppel and Tomasky also have received awards in the worldwide Key Women in Energy program.

American Electric Power owns and operates more than 42,000 megawatts of generating capacity in the United States and select international markets and is the largest electricity generator in the U.S. AEP is also one of the largest electric utilities in the United States, with more than 5 million customers linked to AEP’s 11-state electricity transmission and distribution grid. The company is based in Columbus, Ohio.
