Effective Sept. 1, Hagan, 58, will succeed Joe Vipperman, who will retire at the end of August following a 40-year career.

Hagan has served as AEP senior vice president - governmental affairs since 2000.

“Tom joins the Office of the Chair, AEP’s team of senior executives who guide the company, in a critical position. Our Shared Services organization is the internal engine that provides essential activities to make AEP tick,” said E. Linn Draper Jr., AEP chairman, president and CEO.

“I look forward to working with the many talented people who make up our Shared Services organization,” Hagan said. “It is an organization with some 2,500 employees and contractors who enable all parts of the AEP system to function efficiently.”

Hagan’s focus shifts from the external to the internal. In 20 years with Central and South West Corp. (CSW), Hagan served as assistant to the vice president of governmental affairs and later as vice president of governmental affairs. He was promoted to senior vice president - external affairs in 1996, a position he held until CSW’s merger with AEP was completed in 2000.

Prior to joining CSW, Hagan served first as legislative director, then as administrative assistant, to U.S. Sen. Lloyd Bentsen (D-Texas). He also worked on the staff of former Texas Lt. Gov. William P. Hobby.

Hagan is a graduate of the University of Texas in Austin and served as a first lieutenant in the Marine Corps in Vietnam in 1967-68, rising to captain thereafter. He was named recently to the board of directors of the Wilds wildlife preserve in Cumberland, Ohio. His successor in governmental affairs will be named at a later date.

Vipperman, who plans to return to Virginia following retirement, began his career as an electrical engineer with AEP’s Appalachian Power subsidiary in Virginia. He advanced through many positions at AEP, including controller, president of Appalachian Power and executive vice president - energy delivery.
